I’ve worked in Singapore, Vancouver and Melbourne, in numerous roles including media adviser to government, senior PR agency consultant, communications manager and University lecturer. In each new city, I’ve had to start from scratch with few networks and contacts. However, what I’ve proven with each move, is that publicity works, even when you don’t have established media contacts. You just need to anchor yourself on journalism fundamentals, to find that news hook and nail your journalist pitch. Show them. What’s new? What’s different? What’s the impact? How relevant is it to your audience? And they will come to you.
After more than 20 years in communications, there’s still nothing more gratifying than to see people get what I say and respond. That of course starts from listening. Understanding the audience is at the heart of everything I do. I love it!
